Airtec NXD Compact Pneumatic Cylinders

Airtec Series NXD pneumatic cylinders are designed for industrial machinery where a full-length profile cylinder would occupy unnecessary space. Their compact aluminium body packages double-acting pneumatic movement, magnetic piston sensing and built-in cushioning into a short actuator available from 12 to 100 mm bore.

The NXD platform is considerably more flexible than a basic compact pneumatic cylinder. Airtec offers male and female piston-rod threads, through-rod configurations, non-rotating versions and high-temperature models, allowing the pneumatic cylinder to be selected around the actual machine function rather than simply its physical size.

Why Airtec NXD Works Well in Tight Machinery

Compact pneumatic cylinders are useful when the required linear movement has to fit between frames, guards, tooling or other machine components. NXD provides this reduced installation length without limiting the range to very small bore sizes.

With ten available diameters from 12 to 100 mm, the same compact concept can be used for lightweight positioning tasks or substantially higher-force clamping, lifting and pressing movements.

Standard Male or Female Piston-Rod Thread

Airtec NXD is available with either an external male piston-rod thread or an internal female thread. This gives machine builders more freedom over how tooling, clevises and other mechanical components attach directly to the pneumatic cylinder.

When replacing an existing NXD, the rod-end configuration should be matched rather than assuming two products with identical bore and stroke are mechanically interchangeable.

Through-Rod NXD Versions

Airtec also manufactures NXD versions with a piston rod extending through both ends of the pneumatic cylinder. These configurations are identified separately in the Airtec ordering system and give the machine access to piston movement from both sides.

A through-rod NXD should therefore be treated as a distinct mechanical configuration rather than substituted with the conventional single-rod version.

Non-Rotating NXD Pneumatic Cylinders

Where attached tooling must maintain its orientation, Airtec provides non-rotating NXD versions. These are useful for compact positioning, locating and handling duties where allowing the piston rod to turn could misalign the part attached to the actuator.

This makes NXD particularly versatile because the buyer can remain within the same compact pneumatic cylinder platform while selecting a configuration suited to more demanding mechanical requirements.

Built-In Cushioning Rings

NXD uses built-in cushioning rings to reduce end-of-stroke impact. This provides a straightforward cushioning system without requiring the same manual adjustment associated with some larger pneumatic cylinder families.

For machinery where end-of-stroke energy is particularly high, the attached mass, speed and operating cycle should still be checked carefully to make sure the complete movement is appropriately controlled.

NXDH High-Temperature Pneumatic Cylinders

Airtec also offers the NXDH version for elevated-temperature applications. Current Airtec data specifies operation up to +150°C, with FKM sealing options used in the high-temperature construction.

If an existing actuator is marked NXDH rather than NXD, preserve that high-temperature specification when ordering a replacement instead of selecting the standard pneumatic cylinder purely from its dimensions.

Stroke Availability

Airtec's current public NXD page lists a maximum stroke of 250 mm, while the current detailed technical data allows longer configurations on larger bore sizes, including selected strokes up to 400 mm from 32 mm bore upward. Questions to Check Before Ordering Airtec NXD

My machine has very little axial space but needs a 63 mm bore pneumatic cylinder. Is NXD intended for that type of requirement?

Yes. The NXD platform covers bores up to 100 mm while retaining a compact body, making it useful where significant pneumatic force is required but overall cylinder length is restricted.

My current NXD has a female thread in the piston rod. Can I order the standard male-thread version?

Only if the machine connection is being changed. Airtec provides separate male- and female-thread NXD configurations, so the rod-end arrangement should normally be matched to the existing pneumatic cylinder.

Can NXD stop attached tooling from rotating?

Airtec offers dedicated non-rotating NXD configurations for applications where angular movement of the piston rod needs to be restricted. Select that specific version rather than assuming the standard NXD provides the same function.

Does NXD have adjustable pneumatic cushioning?

No. Current Airtec documentation describes NXD as using built-in cushioning rings. That is different from a manually adjustable pneumatic cushioning system.
