Pneumatic cylinders are widely used to control the movement of products, components and bulk materials through industrial handling systems.
Cylinder Warehouse supports equipment used across manufacturing plants, warehouses, distribution centres, quarries, aggregate sites, asphalt plants, concrete batching plants and recycling facilities.
Roladex Industrial Ltd, the company behind Cylinder Warehouse, is a member of the Materials Handling Engineers Association (MHEA). This supports our understanding of the demanding operating conditions, breakdown pressures and replacement requirements found across the bulk materials handling industry.
Materials handling applications
- Conveyor stops and product pushers
- Sorting gates and diverters
- Transfer mechanisms
- Chute doors and discharge gates
- Loading and unloading equipment
- Lifting and positioning mechanisms
- Pallet and package handling
- Automated storage systems
- Bulk material feed systems
- Bagging and packing machinery
Bulk materials handling plants
Bulk materials handling equipment often operates in dusty, abrasive and exposed environments. Pneumatic cylinders can be used to control:
- Aggregate and mineral chutes
- Conveyor diverters
- Hopper gates
- Weighing and batching mechanisms
- Material sampling equipment
- Bagging systems
- Plant access doors and guards
- Dust extraction and filtration equipment
Related guidance is available for quarrying and aggregate plants and asphalt, concrete and recycling plants.
Selecting a cylinder for handling equipment
The cylinder must provide sufficient force while operating at the required speed and cycle rate. Selection should consider the moving mass, machine geometry, operating pressure, mounting arrangement and environmental conditions.
Where a mechanism creates side loading, rotation or an overturning moment, the load should be supported by external guides or a guided pneumatic cylinder.
Long transfer movements
A conventional piston-rod cylinder requires additional installation space as the rod extends. For long travel within a restricted machine footprint, a rodless pneumatic cylinder may provide a more compact arrangement.
Impact, speed and cushioning
Handling equipment can move substantial loads repeatedly and at speed. End-of-stroke energy may need to be controlled using cylinder cushioning, flow control valves or external shock absorbers.

Replacement and breakdown support
Provide the manufacturer part number wherever possible. For unidentified cylinders, send clear photographs, bore, stroke, mounting details, piston rod thread and port information.
Cylinder Warehouse can supply exact replacements and review alternatives across multiple pneumatic manufacturers where the original product is obsolete or unavailable.
