The XL family covers 32 to 125 mm bore and can reach strokes up to 2800 mm, making it suitable for everything from compact machine movements to long-travel automation. What Makes Airtec XL Different?

Series XL combines a standard industrial profile format with features aimed at machine builders and maintenance teams. The aluminium profile includes dedicated grooves for magnetic proximity sensors, helping keep position detection close to the pneumatic cylinder body without bulky external brackets.

Adjustable pneumatic cushioning allows end-of-stroke deceleration to be tuned to the attached load, while specialist versions extend the range into colder, hotter and dirtier operating environments.

The XL aluminium profile contains dedicated sensor grooves for magnetic cylinder switches. This makes Series XL particularly useful on automated machinery where extension and retraction positions need to be confirmed as part of the control sequence.

Long-Stroke Pneumatic Cylinder Applications

With strokes available up to 2800 mm, XL is suitable for machine functions well beyond short clamping or locating movements. Longer configurations can be used for transfer systems, guards, slides, handling equipment and other applications where substantial linear travel is required.

Specialist XL Versions

Airtec extends the XL platform with dedicated variants for more demanding operating conditions. Low-temperature versions are rated down to -40°C, while high-temperature versions reach +150°C. Low-friction versions are also available for applications requiring smoother movement, and metal-scraper versions provide additional piston-rod protection in contaminated environments.

This is an important replacement consideration: an existing specialist XL pneumatic cylinder should not automatically be replaced with the standard version just because the physical dimensions appear similar.

Replacing an Existing Airtec XL Pneumatic Cylinder

For maintenance work, start with the complete Airtec part number from the existing pneumatic cylinder. Check the operating version, bore, stroke, port size, piston-rod thread, temperature requirement and any scraper or low-friction option before ordering.

Before Ordering Airtec XL

Is XL intended only for standard factory temperatures?

No. Airtec offers dedicated low-temperature and high-temperature XL versions, so the operating environment should be checked before ordering a replacement.

Can XL be used on long-travel machinery?

Yes. Airtec specifies strokes up to 2800 mm. Longer strokes require additional consideration of rod stability, load, mounting and airflow.

Why does the aluminium profile matter?

The profile provides the main cylinder structure and also incorporates grooves for magnetic sensors, helping simplify position detection and installation on automated machinery.

Should I replace an XL metal-scraper version with standard XL?

Not automatically. The scraper version is intended for a different operating environment, so the original specification should be retained unless the machine conditions have been reassessed.
