Technical information & FAQs
Airtec ZDMK Through-Rod Pneumatic Cylinders
Airtec Series ZDMK pneumatic cylinders use a piston rod that extends from both ends of the actuator, giving machine designers mechanical access to piston movement on either side of the cylinder. This through-rod construction makes ZDMK particularly useful for fixtures, guides, positioning mechanisms and machines where a conventional single-ended pneumatic cylinder cannot provide the required mechanical arrangement.
The range follows ISO 6432 dimensions and uses a slim stainless-steel cylinder tube, helping the actuator fit into compact industrial machinery. Magnetic piston sensing is provided on standard versions for integration with automated machine controls.
If your application only requires a conventional single-ended piston rod, compare the Airtec ZDM pneumatic cylinder range. You can also browse the complete Airtec pneumatic cylinder range or compare other ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinders available from Cylinder Warehouse.
Why Use a Through-Rod Pneumatic Cylinder?
A through-rod pneumatic cylinder places piston rod area on both sides of the piston and provides an external mechanical connection at both cylinder ends. This creates a fundamentally different actuator from a conventional single-rod pneumatic cylinder.
The second rod end can be used for additional tooling, external sensing mechanisms, guidance, synchronised machine functions or other equipment that needs direct access to piston travel.
When replacing an existing ZDMK pneumatic cylinder, that double-ended construction is therefore one of the first characteristics that must be retained.

16, 20 and 25 mm ZDMK Pneumatic Cylinders
Cylinder Warehouse carries Series ZDMK across three principal bore sizes, allowing the through-rod format to be selected around the force and machine envelope required.
- 16 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — compact through-rod actuation for lighter machine functions.
- 20 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — a useful middle size for general automation and fixture applications.
- 25 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — higher force while retaining the slim ISO 6432 body format.
The Cylinder Warehouse range includes strokes from short positioning movements through to substantially longer travel, including 400 and 500 mm ZDMK pneumatic cylinders on selected bore sizes.
Stainless-Steel Tube for a Slim Industrial Construction
Standard ZDMK products use a 1.4301 stainless-steel cylinder tube combined with stainless-steel piston-rod construction. This gives the range a narrow round profile that can fit into machinery where a larger rectangular pneumatic cylinder would occupy unnecessary space.
The 20 and 25 mm catalogue variants use G1/8 pneumatic connections, while the exact connection on smaller versions should be confirmed against the individual Airtec MPN before ordering.
Standard ZDMK and Stainless ES Versions
Airtec also offers ZDMK ES pneumatic cylinders with more extensive stainless-steel construction. On verified ES versions, the cylinder head, foot and tube are manufactured from 1.4301 stainless steel and the piston rod from 1.4436 stainless steel.
These ES products should not be confused with standard ZDMK simply because bore and stroke are identical. Where corrosion resistance was part of the original machine specification, preserve the full Airtec MPN including the ES designation when sourcing the replacement.
Magnetic Position Detection
Standard ZDMK pneumatic cylinders use a magnetic piston, allowing compatible Airtec cylinder switches to detect piston position without mechanical contact.
This is useful on automated equipment where the control system needs to confirm that the pneumatic cylinder has reached a defined position before allowing the next machine operation to begin.

High-Temperature and ATEX Configurations
Selected ZDMK pneumatic cylinders can be supplied with FKM seals for higher-temperature operation. Verified Airtec specifications show FKM versions rated up to +150°C; these versions can have different sensing characteristics and should be selected from the complete product specification rather than temperature alone.
ATEX-approved variants are also available for appropriate hazardous-area applications. Where an existing cylinder carries an ATEX designation, replace it with the correctly certified configuration rather than a visually similar standard pneumatic cylinder.
ZDM or ZDMK?
The choice is primarily mechanical.
Airtec ZDM pneumatic cylinders use a conventional single-ended rod arrangement. ZDMK pneumatic cylinders use a through piston rod extending from both ends.
If the second rod end is used by the machine, the two ranges are not direct substitutes even when the bore and stroke are identical.
Ordering the Correct ZDMK Replacement
My cylinder has a rod coming out of both ends. Is that the key ZDMK feature?
Yes. The through piston rod is the defining mechanical feature of Series ZDMK and should be retained when replacing an existing unit.
Can I replace a ZDMK with a standard ZDM pneumatic cylinder?
Only if the machine is redesigned so the second piston-rod connection is no longer required. A standard ZDM does not provide the same double-ended mechanical arrangement.
What does ES mean on a ZDMK pneumatic cylinder?
ES identifies a stainless-steel configuration with more extensive corrosion-resistant construction. If the existing product is marked ZDMK ... ES, preserve that suffix when sourcing the replacement.
Does ZDMK support magnetic piston sensing?
Yes on standard verified configurations. High-temperature FKM versions can differ, so sensor compatibility should be checked against the exact Airtec MPN.
Where should I go if the exact ZDMK is unavailable?
Start with the complete Airtec pneumatic cylinder range for an Airtec replacement, or compare other ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinders. A cross-brand alternative should still be checked for through-rod construction, dimensions, mounting, ports and sensing before substitution.
