Collection: Camozzi Series 42 Tie-Rod-Free Pneumatic Cylinders
Technical information & FAQs
Camozzi Series 42 Tie-Rod-Free Pneumatic Cylinders
Camozzi Series 42 pneumatic cylinders use a clean round-body construction without external tie rods, giving the actuator a compact and uncluttered exterior for industrial machinery. A stainless-steel cylinder tube and piston rod combine with anodised aluminium end covers to create a durable pneumatic cylinder for repetitive linear motion.
The range covers 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm bores and includes single-acting, double-acting and through-rod configurations. Magnetic piston sensing is available across the family, while cushioned versions use adjustable pneumatic end cushioning together with mechanical impact damping.

A Pneumatic Cylinder Without External Tie Rods
Series 42 was designed specifically to avoid the exposed tie rods found on many traditional pneumatic cylinder constructions. The result is a smoother external body with fewer projecting components around the cylinder tube.
That makes Series 42 attractive where machine packaging is tight or where the designer simply wants a cleaner round pneumatic cylinder without moving to a conventional rectangular profile design.
Stainless-Steel Tube and Piston Rod
The Series 42 cylinder tube is manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel, while the standard piston rod uses AISI 420B stainless steel. The end covers are anodised aluminium.
This combination provides a robust industrial construction while keeping the pneumatic cylinder relatively lightweight compared with an all-steel assembly.
Series 42 Operating Configurations
Series 42 is available in several genuinely different operating arrangements. These include single-acting spring-return pneumatic cylinders, double-acting cushioned pneumatic cylinders, double-acting versions without pneumatic cushioning and through-rod pneumatic cylinders with cushioning at both ends.
This matters when ordering a replacement. A Series 42 code does not merely identify bore and stroke; it also identifies how the pneumatic cylinder operates and whether pneumatic cushioning is incorporated.
Pneumatic Connections Across the Range
| Bore | Pneumatic Port | Piston Rod Thread |
|---|---|---|
| 32 mm | G1/8 | M10 × 1.25 |
| 40 mm | G1/4 | M12 × 1.25 |
| 50 mm | G1/4 | M16 × 1.5 |
| 63 mm | G3/8 | M16 × 1.5 |
Adjustable Cushioning for Controlled Stops
Cushioned Series 42 pneumatic cylinders allow end-of-stroke deceleration to be adjusted to suit the moving load and operating speed. Mechanical cushioning is also incorporated to reduce piston impact noise as the cylinder reaches the end position.
This combination is useful on repetitive machinery where abrupt stopping could transfer unnecessary shock into the cylinder mountings, tooling or surrounding machine structure.
Flexible Mounting Options
Series 42 can be installed using a range of mechanical arrangements including front and rear flange mounting, foot mounting, front and rear hinges, threaded trunnion pins and nose-nut mounting.
The correct mounting arrangement should be retained when replacing an existing pneumatic cylinder, particularly where the cylinder forms part of a moving or pivoting mechanism.
Choosing and Replacing Camozzi Series 42
My existing Series 42 has no cushioning adjustment. Is that normal?
Yes. Series 42 includes double-acting versions without pneumatic cushioning as well as versions with front and rear adjustable cushioning. The operating code should be checked before ordering a replacement.
Why would I choose Series 42 instead of a tie-rod pneumatic cylinder?
The tie-rod-free body gives Series 42 a cleaner external profile while retaining a robust stainless-steel tube construction. It can be particularly useful where external clearance around the pneumatic cylinder is restricted.
Can I replace a single-rod Series 42 with a through-rod version?
Not as a direct substitution. Through-rod pneumatic cylinders have a different mechanical arrangement and should only be selected where the machine is designed for that configuration.
How do I know whether my Series 42 is single acting or double acting?
The complete Camozzi product code identifies the operating type. For example, Series 42 codes use different operation identifiers for single-acting, cushioned double-acting, non-cushioned double-acting and through-rod configurations.
Does Series 42 suit applications where cylinder position must be detected?
Yes. Series 42 uses a magnetic piston, allowing compatible Camozzi sensors to provide non-contact position feedback to the machine control system.
