Technical information & FAQs
Camozzi Series 50 Rodless Pneumatic Cylinders
Camozzi Series 50 rodless pneumatic cylinders are built for linear movements where a conventional piston rod would make the machine unnecessarily long. Instead of projecting a rod beyond the cylinder body, piston movement is transferred directly to an external carriage that travels along the aluminium profile.
With strokes from 100 to 4000 mm, Series 50 is particularly useful for transfer systems, positioning equipment, handling machinery and long-travel automation where installation length matters. Seven bore sizes from 16 to 80 mm allow the same rodless concept to cover applications ranging from relatively light movements to substantially heavier carriage loads.

Long-Stroke Motion Without a Projecting Piston Rod
A conventional pneumatic cylinder needs enough machine space for both its body and the piston rod when fully extended. On a long stroke, that can result in a very large overall installation envelope.
Series 50 removes that projecting rod. The load is connected to a carriage travelling directly along the pneumatic cylinder body, allowing long linear movements to be packaged much more efficiently.
With strokes available up to 4000 mm across the bore range, this makes Series 50 particularly relevant where machine length is constrained but substantial travel is still required.
Standard or Flanged Carriage?
Camozzi offers two principal Series 50 carriage constructions.
| Model | Carriage | Typical Selection Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 50M2P | Standard carriage | Compact connection to the moving load |
| 50M2U | Flanged carriage | Larger mounting interface for attaching machinery or tooling |
The carriage style should be chosen according to how the moving component attaches to the pneumatic cylinder. When replacing an existing Series 50 unit, matching the original P or U construction avoids unnecessary changes to the machine interface.
Series 50 Pneumatic Port Sizes
| Bore | Pneumatic Connection |
|---|---|
| 16 mm | M5 |
| 25 mm | G1/8 |
| 32 mm | G1/4 |
| 40 mm | G1/4 |
| 50 mm | G1/4 |
| 63 mm | G3/8 |
| 80 mm | G1/2 |
Flexible Air Connections for Easier Machine Plumbing
Series 50 provides four pneumatic connection positions on each chamber, giving installers flexibility over where air lines enter the pneumatic cylinder.
Camozzi can also provide configurations where both chambers are supplied from the same end of the pneumatic cylinder. This can simplify pipe routing on long machines where running pneumatic tubing to opposite ends of a multi-metre actuator would otherwise be inconvenient.
Load and Torque Matter on a Rodless Pneumatic Cylinder
Selecting Series 50 requires more than calculating pneumatic force. Because the moving load is attached directly to the carriage, the pneumatic cylinder must also withstand the vertical load and the bending and torsional moments created by that load.
Camozzi publishes maximum permissible load, bending-moment and torsional-moment values for every Series 50 bore. The position of the load relative to the carriage can therefore be just as important as its total weight.
For long strokes, intermediate supports may also be required to limit profile deflection. Camozzi specifies BH-50 intermediate support brackets for installations where the unsupported distance and applied load exceed the permitted values.
Adjustable Cushioning on Long-Travel Applications
Series 50 normally uses adjustable pneumatic end cushioning. This is particularly important on rodless pneumatic cylinders because the carriage may be transporting a significant external load at speed.
Correct cushioning adjustment helps decelerate the piston and carriage before the end position, reducing impact on the pneumatic cylinder, mounting feet and attached machine equipment.
Magnetic Position Detection Along the Travel
A permanent magnet is incorporated into the Series 50 piston. Compatible proximity switches can therefore be positioned along the sliding axis to detect carriage position without mechanically contacting the moving assembly.
This allows machine builders to establish end positions or additional control points along a long pneumatic cylinder stroke as required by the sequence.
Before Ordering a Series 50 Rodless Pneumatic Cylinder
Start with the travel required, but do not select the pneumatic cylinder from stroke alone. The load acting on the carriage, its distance from the carriage centre, acceleration, operating speed and any bending or twisting forces all affect the correct Series 50 size.
For an existing installation, identify whether the machine uses the standard or flanged carriage and check whether intermediate support brackets are fitted. Those details can reveal important information about how the original pneumatic cylinder was selected.
Series 50 Selection Questions
Can I use Series 50 for a 3 or 4 metre movement?
Yes. Camozzi specifies Series 50 strokes up to 4000 mm across all seven bore sizes. On long strokes, however, the load and unsupported profile length must be checked to establish whether intermediate support brackets are required.
Should I choose the pneumatic cylinder bore from load weight alone?
No. On a rodless pneumatic cylinder, bending and torsional moments caused by the location of the load also matter. A relatively modest load mounted well away from the carriage centre can impose considerably greater stress than the same load positioned directly over it.
What's the practical difference between 50M2P and 50M2U?
50M2P uses the standard Series 50 carriage, while 50M2U uses the larger flanged carriage. The correct choice depends primarily on the mechanical interface required between the pneumatic cylinder carriage and the moving part of the machine.
Can both air pipes connect at the same end of Series 50?
Yes. Camozzi states that both chambers can be supplied from one side on request. This can make pneumatic installation considerably easier on long-stroke machines.
Why are intermediate supports fitted to some Series 50 pneumatic cylinders?
As stroke length and carriage load increase, the aluminium profile can deflect between mounting points. Camozzi's BH-50 intermediate supports reduce the unsupported span and are selected according to the cylinder size, load and mounting distance.
When would I choose a rodless pneumatic cylinder instead of a conventional pneumatic cylinder?
Rodless construction becomes particularly attractive when a long linear stroke is required but there is not enough machine space for a conventional pneumatic cylinder body plus an extending piston rod. Series 50 packages the moving carriage alongside the cylinder profile instead.
