Technical information & FAQs
Camozzi Series 52 Guided Rodless Pneumatic Cylinders
Camozzi Series 52 rodless pneumatic cylinders are designed for linear-motion applications where the moving carriage must do more than simply travel from one end of the stroke to the other. Alongside the basic version, Camozzi offers slide-bearing and roller-bearing guided configurations to support higher external loads and resist the bending and torsional forces created by offset tooling.
This makes Series 52 especially relevant to transfer systems, handling equipment, positioning mechanisms and long-travel automation where the carriage is expected to support and control the moving load directly.

Three Ways to Support the Moving Load
The most important Series 52 buying decision is the carriage guidance system. Camozzi divides the range into three principal versions, each intended for a different level of mechanical loading.
| Series 52 Version | Code | Best Suited To |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | M | Applications where the external mechanism provides most of the load guidance |
| Slide Bearing | G | Loads requiring increased carriage support and resistance to external moments |
| Roller Bearing | R | Higher-load or higher-speed guided movement requiring greater carriage capability |
The roller-bearing version is available on 25, 32 and 40 mm bore pneumatic cylinders. Camozzi does not offer the R configuration on the 50 and 63 mm sizes. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Why the Bearing Version Matters
A rodless pneumatic cylinder can be exposed to forces that a conventional piston-rod cylinder does not experience in the same way. The moving carriage may have to support vertical load while simultaneously resisting pitch, yaw or rolling moments created by tooling mounted away from the carriage centreline.
For this reason, Series 52 selection should consider the direction and position of the load as well as its weight. Camozzi publishes different allowable force and torque values for the basic, slide-bearing and roller-bearing versions, with the guided models providing substantially greater resistance to external moments. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
Standard or Short Carriage?
Every main Series 52 configuration can be supplied with a standard or shortened carriage. The short-carriage option reduces the overall moving assembly and can be useful where machine packaging is tight, but the permissible moment capability differs from the standard carriage.
The correct carriage should therefore be selected from the actual mechanical load rather than simply choosing the physically smaller option.
Long Strokes Up to Approximately Six Metres
| Bore | Maximum Stroke with Standard Carriage |
|---|---|
| 25 mm | 6000 mm |
| 32 mm | 5950 mm |
| 40 mm | 5900 mm |
| 50 mm | 5900 mm |
| 63 mm | 5880 mm |
Short-carriage versions are specified up to 6000 mm stroke. On long installations, profile support and deflection become part of the cylinder selection, so intermediate support brackets may be required depending on load and unsupported distance. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
Air Supply From One End Only
Series 52 can be specified so both cylinder chambers are supplied from one end of the actuator. This is particularly useful on long-stroke machinery because it can simplify tubing routes and reduce the need to run pneumatic lines to opposite ends of the machine.
Camozzi identifies operation code 8 for double-acting cushioned Series 52 pneumatic cylinders with one-sided air supply, while code 2 uses connections from both sides. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}
Series 52 Pneumatic Connections
| Bore | Pneumatic Port |
|---|---|
| 25 mm | G1/8 |
| 32 mm | G1/8 |
| 40 mm | G1/4 |
| 50 mm | G3/8 |
| 63 mm | G3/8 |
When Series 52 Is the Better Rodless Choice
Series 52 becomes particularly attractive when the moving carriage itself must support and guide tooling. If the machine already uses a separate linear guide, the basic M version may be sufficient. If the pneumatic cylinder needs to deal with greater external load and moments directly, the G slide-bearing or R roller-bearing versions provide more capable guidance.
That makes Series 52 a strong solution for pick-and-place movements, transfer equipment, loading systems and long-travel automation where the actuator and linear guide need to work as one assembly.
Series 52 Selection Questions
Should I choose M, G or R for my machine?
Choose from the forces acting on the carriage, not simply the pneumatic cylinder bore. M is the basic version, G adds slide-bearing guidance and R uses roller bearings for higher guided-load capability. The applied bending and torsional moments should be checked against Camozzi's published limits before ordering.
Can I mount tooling directly onto the Series 52 carriage?
Yes, but the permissible external load and moments depend on the selected carriage and bearing version. Tooling positioned away from the carriage centre creates additional leverage and may require a guided G or R configuration even if the actual load weight appears modest.
Why would I order the one-side air-supply version?
On a long machine it can simplify installation considerably by keeping the pneumatic connections at one end of the Series 52 rather than routing pipework to both ends of the actuator.
Can the short carriage replace a standard carriage directly?
Not simply on physical size alone. The shorter carriage changes the load and moment capability of the assembly, so the mechanical requirements should be checked before changing from a standard P carriage to the shorter C configuration.
I'm running the carriage quickly with a heavy offset load. Is pneumatic cushioning enough?
Not always. Camozzi states that where the application falls outside the published end-cushion limits, external shock absorbers should be used and positioned in line with the centre of the moving mass. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}
