Technical information & FAQs

Camozzi Series QP Short-Stroke Pneumatic Cylinders

Camozzi Series QP pneumatic cylinders are designed for machine movements where the required travel is short but available installation length is extremely limited. Their compact aluminium-profile construction allows pneumatic force to be packaged into a shallow body, with strokes starting from just 1 mm.

The range spans ten bore sizes from 12 to 100 mm, allowing Series QP to handle everything from very small actuation tasks to short movements requiring considerably greater force. Single-acting, double-acting and through-rod pneumatic cylinders are available, with magnetic position sensing integrated into the compact profile.

When the Movement Is Small but the Force Requirement Is Not

A short machine movement does not necessarily mean a small load. Series QP allows the designer to select bore independently from the very short stroke requirement, so a large piston area can be used without committing valuable machine space to an unnecessarily long pneumatic cylinder.

This is particularly useful for clamping, pressing, ejecting, locating, lifting and stop functions where the required movement may only be a few millimetres or centimetres.

Stroke Lengths Starting at Just 1 mm

Series QP is unusually flexible at the short end of the stroke range. Camozzi specifies minimum strokes from 1 mm, with standard stroke options including very short 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm movements as well as longer configurations.

The 12 to 25 mm bore pneumatic cylinders can be specified up to 150 mm stroke, while the 32 to 100 mm bore sizes extend up to 200 mm. This allows Series QP to remain useful beyond ultra-short movements without abandoning its compact construction.

Ten Bore Sizes for a Wide Force Range

Series QP covers 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80 and 100 mm bores. That unusually broad range means the same short-stroke cylinder concept can be applied across very different force requirements.

A 12 or 16 mm Series QP pneumatic cylinder may suit a lightweight locating mechanism, while the larger 63, 80 or 100 mm versions can provide substantially greater thrust over a similarly short travel.

Single Acting, Double Acting or Through Rod

Series QP is not restricted to one operating arrangement. Single-acting front-spring pneumatic cylinders are available alongside standard double-acting and double-acting through-rod versions.

The operating type should be selected from the machine function. A spring-return Series QP can simplify applications that need a defined return condition, while double acting provides powered movement in both directions. Through-rod versions provide a mechanically different arrangement where rod access or symmetrical characteristics are required on both sides.

Integrated Sensor Grooves on Three Sides

Camozzi machines longitudinal sensor guides into three sides of the Series QP profile. Compatible magnetic switches can therefore be positioned along the pneumatic cylinder without adding large external mounting brackets.

For sensor operation Camozzi specifies a minimum stroke of 10 mm, which is important on this particular range because Series QP itself can be ordered with strokes considerably shorter than that.

Important: Provide an External End Stop

Camozzi specifically states that an external end stop must be provided for Series QP pneumatic cylinders. This is an important application requirement and should be considered when designing the mechanism or replacing an existing Series QP installation.

The surrounding machine should therefore provide the required mechanical stop rather than relying on the pneumatic cylinder itself to absorb uncontrolled end-of-travel energy.

High-Temperature and ATEX Options

Series QP coding includes alternative seal packages for more demanding conditions. An FKM piston-rod seal can be specified, while all-FKM configurations are available on applicable bore sizes.

ATEX-certified Series QP pneumatic cylinders are also available. Where temperature or hazardous-area requirements form part of the application, the relevant option should be identified in the full Camozzi product code before ordering.

Before You Order a Series QP Pneumatic Cylinder

I only need 5 mm of travel but quite a lot of force. Is Series QP designed for that?

Yes. This is exactly the type of application where a short-stroke pneumatic cylinder can be useful. Series QP combines very short stroke options with bore sizes reaching 100 mm, allowing the required force to be achieved without using a conventional long-body pneumatic cylinder.

Can I fit a magnetic sensor to a 5 mm stroke Series QP?

Camozzi specifies a minimum 10 mm stroke for sensor use. Although Series QP pneumatic cylinders themselves are available with shorter strokes, the sensing requirement needs to be considered separately.

Do I need to provide a mechanical stop in the machine?

Yes. Camozzi states that the Series QP cylinder end stop must be provided externally. The machine design should therefore include a suitable means of controlling the final mechanical travel.

Should I choose QP or QPR if the attached tooling must not rotate?

Choose the QPR family where anti-rotation is required. Standard Series QP provides compact short-stroke pneumatic actuation, whereas QPR incorporates non-rotating guides specifically to control piston-rod rotation.

Is QP limited to double-acting applications?

No. Series QP also includes single-acting front-spring and double-acting through-rod configurations, so the pneumatic cylinder can be selected around the actual machine sequence rather than only its physical size.
