Collection: EMC Series SQ Long-Stroke Compact Pneumatic Cylinders
Technical information & FAQs
EMC SQ Compact Pneumatic Cylinders
EMC Series SQ pneumatic cylinders are double-acting compact actuators designed for machinery where installation space is restricted but the application needs more stroke flexibility than a conventional short-stroke compact cylinder. EMC currently identifies SQ as the long-stroke branch of its compact pneumatic cylinder range.
The square-profile aluminium body provides a short, robust actuator package for clamping, lifting, holding, positioning and general automation duties. The current Cylinder Warehouse SQ range covers bore sizes from 25 to 100 mm with numerous stroke combinations, allowing the same basic platform to be used across widely different machine-force requirements.

More Stroke Without Moving to a Conventional Profile Cylinder
The main reason to choose EMC SQ is packaging. A machine may need greater linear travel but still have insufficient room for a conventional long-body pneumatic cylinder.
SQ retains a compact square-body format while extending the useful stroke range, making it suitable for fixture movement, component transfer, clamping, positioning and machine mechanisms where both installation length and travel need to be considered.

25 to 100 mm Bore SQ Pneumatic Cylinders
The current Cylinder Warehouse SQ catalogue provides seven useful bore sizes:
- 25 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — compact machinery and lighter fixture movements.
- 32 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — general automation, positioning and holding duties.
- 40 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — medium-force compact machine applications.
- 50 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — increased force without moving to a larger profile-cylinder format.
- 63 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — substantial clamping, lifting and positioning force.
- 80 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — higher-force compact industrial movement.
- 100 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — the largest SQ size currently represented in Cylinder Warehouse.
Pneumatic Port Sizes Change with Bore
The pneumatic connection increases as the actuator size grows, so the complete EMC part number should be used when replacing an existing SQ pneumatic cylinder.
| Bore | Verified Pneumatic Port |
|---|---|
| 25 mm | M5 |
| 32 mm | G1/8 |
| 40 mm | G1/8 |
| 50 mm | G1/4 |
| 63 mm | G1/4 |
| 80 mm | G3/8 |
| 100 mm | G3/8 |
SQ Stroke Availability
The wider EMC SQ catalogue includes stroke lengths from 5 mm through to 100 mm depending on bore. The current Cylinder Warehouse range includes examples such as SQ 25/40 SZ, SQ 32/45 SZ, SQ 40/70 SZ, SQ 50/60 SZ, SQ 63/80 SZ, SQ 80/80 SZ and SQ 100/90 SZ.
This spread is what makes SQ particularly useful: it provides compact construction without limiting the machine designer to only very short movements.
Magnetic Position Sensing
Documented EMC SQ pneumatic cylinders use a magnetic piston, allowing compatible cylinder switches to provide non-contact position feedback.
This means a compact SQ actuator can be integrated into automated machinery where the PLC needs confirmation of extension or retraction before the next stage of the process begins.
Anodised Aluminium Square Body
SQ uses an anodised aluminium compact body with a hard-chrome-plated steel piston rod and NBR sealing.
The square body shape also provides multiple surfaces around the actuator for installation and sensor positioning, helping the pneumatic cylinder fit cleanly into tightly packaged fixtures and machine frames.
SQ or SFS?
| EMC Series | Format | Primary Buying Reason |
|---|---|---|
| SQ | EMC compact square-body format | Compact installation with the SQ mechanical format and extended stroke choice |
| SFS | ISO 21287 compact format | Standardised ISO 21287 dimensions are required |
SQ should not be described as ISO 21287 simply because both ranges are compact pneumatic cylinders. EMC's SFS range is the dedicated ISO 21287 family; SQ uses its own compact-cylinder geometry.
SQ or SQN?
EMC SQN belongs to the same wider compact-cylinder family, but EMC identifies SQ separately as its long-stroke type.
For exact replacement work, use the series printed on the existing pneumatic cylinder rather than assuming SQ and SQN are interchangeable because their appearance and bore sizes may overlap.
Examples from the Cylinder Warehouse SQ Range
| Example MPN | Bore | Stroke | Port |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQ 25/45 SZ | 25 mm | 45 mm | M5 |
| SQ 32/45 SZ | 32 mm | 45 mm | G1/8 |
| SQ 40/70 SZ | 40 mm | 70 mm | G1/8 |
| SQ 50/60 SZ | 50 mm | 60 mm | G1/4 |
| SQ 63/80 SZ | 63 mm | 80 mm | G1/4 |
| SQ 80/80 SZ | 80 mm | 80 mm | G3/8 |
| SQ 100/90 SZ | 100 mm | 90 mm | G3/8 |
Replacing an Existing EMC SQ Pneumatic Cylinder
Use the complete manufacturer part number wherever possible. A marking such as SQ 63/80 SZ identifies the series, 63 mm bore and 80 mm stroke, while the SQ body format determines the surrounding mechanical dimensions.
Do not replace an SQ purely from bore and stroke. Check the mounting arrangement, pneumatic port, piston-rod connection and available machine space before changing series or manufacturer.
If the exact SQ cannot be supplied, start with the compact pneumatic cylinder range and compare the complete mechanical specification before choosing an alternative.
EMC SQ Selection Questions
Is EMC SQ an ISO 21287 pneumatic cylinder?
No ISO 21287 designation is confirmed for the SQ products in the current Cylinder Warehouse data. EMC lists SQ separately as a compact-cylinder family, while the EMC SFS range is the dedicated ISO 21287 platform.
Is EMC SQ double acting?
Yes. The SQ products currently stocked in the Cylinder Warehouse catalogue are double acting.
Why does EMC describe SQ as a long-stroke compact cylinder?
The range retains a compact square-body design while supporting a broader choice of stroke lengths, including configurations up to 100 mm in the documented catalogue.
Is SQ magnetic?
Yes on documented standard SQ configurations, allowing suitable cylinder switches to provide non-contact piston position sensing.
What materials are used?
The verified standard construction uses an anodised aluminium body, hard-chrome-plated steel piston rod and NBR seals.
What is the largest SQ bore in Cylinder Warehouse?
The current range extends to 100 mm bore.
Should I replace SQ with SQN if the bore and stroke match?
Not automatically. They are separate EMC series and their exact mechanical dimensions and configuration should be compared before substitution.
