Single Acting Pneumatic Cylinders

Single acting pneumatic cylinders use compressed air to move the piston in one direction and normally use an internal spring or external force for the return movement. Depending on the design, the cylinder can be spring return or spring extend.

They are commonly used for clamping, ejecting, lifting, stopping, positioning and fail-state applications where powered movement is only required in one direction. Air consumption can be lower than an equivalent double acting cylinder because only one chamber is supplied during normal operation.

Selection should consider the required working direction, spring force, available output force, bore, stroke, mounting arrangement and the position the cylinder must adopt if the air supply is removed.
