Technical information & FAQs
Airtec ZDMO Anti-Rotation Pneumatic Cylinders
Airtec Series ZDMO pneumatic cylinders are designed for linear movements where the piston rod must extend and retract without allowing attached tooling to rotate freely. A hexagonal anti-rotation piston rod helps maintain the orientation of pushers, stops, locating components and other machine attachments throughout the stroke.
ZDMO retains the slim round-body format associated with Airtec's ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinders, making it particularly useful where both installation space and tooling alignment matter. Standard versions are double acting and magnetic, with a stainless-steel cylinder tube and piston rod for robust repetitive industrial movement.
For ordinary single-rod movement without anti-rotation, compare Airtec ZDM pneumatic cylinders. Where the application needs a piston rod extending from both ends, see Airtec ZDMK through-rod pneumatic cylinders.
Why Use an Anti-Rotation Pneumatic Cylinder?
A conventional round piston rod can rotate around its own axis unless the attached mechanism provides separate guidance. That may not matter when the rod simply pushes against a flat surface, but it becomes a problem when the rod carries tooling whose angular position affects the machine process.
Series ZDMO addresses that problem mechanically. The hexagonal piston-rod arrangement restricts rotation, helping attached tooling retain its orientation during extension and retraction.
This makes ZDMO particularly relevant to compact locating, pushing, indexing and positioning mechanisms where adding a separate external anti-rotation guide would increase component count and installation size.

Choose ZDMO When Tooling Orientation Matters
ZDMO becomes particularly valuable when a component attached to the piston rod has a defined top, bottom or angular orientation. Examples include shaped pushers, locating fingers, stops and tooling plates that must arrive at the workpiece in the same orientation on every cycle.
If rotation does not matter, the standard Airtec ZDM range may provide the simpler solution. The purpose of ZDMO is specifically to add resistance to piston-rod rotation while retaining compact pneumatic actuation.
ZDMO Bore and Connection Sizes
| Bore | Pneumatic Connection | Rod Thread |
|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | M5 | M6 |
| 20 mm | G1/8 | Check individual MPN |
| 25 mm | G1/8 | Check individual MPN |
Verified 16 mm ZDMO products use an M5 air connection and M6 piston-rod thread. Airtec ZDMO 20 mm products use G1/8 pneumatic connections, while the exact rod and dimensional data should always be checked against the individual manufacturer part number before replacement.
Compact Stainless-Steel Round Construction
The standard ZDMO construction combines anodised aluminium end components with a 1.4301 stainless-steel tube and 1.4305 stainless-steel piston rod. This keeps the actuator slim while providing a durable industrial body for repetitive machine cycles.
The overall format also allows ZDMO to sit within the wider ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinder range, making it easier to compare other small-format pneumatic cylinders where a replacement or alternative is being investigated.
Magnetic Feedback for Automated Machinery
Standard verified ZDMO pneumatic cylinders incorporate a magnetic piston. Compatible cylinder switches can therefore monitor piston position as part of a PLC or machine-control sequence.
The combination of magnetic sensing and anti-rotation is particularly useful where the machine needs both confirmation of cylinder position and repeatable orientation of attached tooling.
Standard and High-Temperature ZDMO Options
Airtec offers FKM-sealed versions for higher-temperature applications, with verified catalogue data showing operation up to +150°C. These versions may differ from standard products in their magnetic sensing specification, so they should not be selected solely from bore and stroke.
ATEX-certified versions are also available for suitable hazardous-area applications. Preserve the relevant option suffix when replacing an existing specialist pneumatic cylinder.
ZDM, ZDMK or ZDMO?
| Airtec Series | Key Mechanical Difference | Use It When... |
|---|---|---|
| ZDM | Standard single piston rod | A normal compact linear movement is required |
| ZDMK | Piston rod extends from both ends | The machine needs a mechanical connection on both sides |
| ZDMO | Hexagonal anti-rotation piston rod | Attached tooling must maintain its angular orientation |
This is exactly why we are keeping these as separate Cylinder Warehouse series collections: the codes identify genuinely different mechanical functions, not merely cosmetic variants.
Getting a ZDMO Replacement Right
My current pneumatic cylinder has a hexagonal piston rod. Should I replace it with a standard round-rod ZDM?
Not if the machine relies on that hexagonal rod to stop the attached tooling rotating. The anti-rotation function is part of the ZDMO design and should be preserved unless separate external guidance is being added to the machine.
Does anti-rotation mean the cylinder can carry unlimited side load?
No. Preventing piston-rod rotation is not the same as providing a full external linear guide. Side loads, bending moments and tooling weight still need to remain suitable for the pneumatic cylinder and machine arrangement.
Could I use ZDMO instead of adding a separate anti-rotation guide?
In suitable light-duty applications, that is one of its main advantages. The hexagonal piston rod provides rotational restraint within the pneumatic cylinder itself, helping keep compact mechanisms simpler.
