EMC Series SGM pneumatic cylinders are heavy-duty guided actuators built around a triple-rod construction and self-lubricating slide bearings. Instead of relying on the piston rod alone to support attached tooling, the guide assembly helps resist lateral forces, restrict unwanted rotation and maintain the orientation of the end plate throughout the cylinder stroke.

Why Use a Guided Pneumatic Cylinder?

A conventional pneumatic cylinder is designed primarily to generate linear force. Its piston rod should not normally be expected to support substantial side loads, bending moments or tooling that needs precise angular control.

SGM integrates the guidance into the actuator. Two guide rods work alongside the central pneumatic cylinder mechanism and connect to the front tooling plate, creating EMC's triple-rod guided arrangement.

This allows the guide system to carry more of the external mechanical load while the pneumatic cylinder provides the driving force. The result is a more appropriate actuator for equipment where the load does more than simply push directly along the piston-rod centreline.

Triple-Rod Construction for Side-Load Resistance

The defining feature of SGM is the arrangement of the central pneumatic actuator with two parallel guide rods and a common end plate. EMC describes the range as a heavy-duty triple-rod guided cylinder designed to provide strong resistance to side-load forces.

This is particularly valuable when the tooling attached to the cylinder plate is offset from the centreline, contacts a moving workpiece or experiences lateral forces during the machine cycle.

Side or Bottom Pneumatic Connections

Published EMC SGM product data provides pneumatic connection options from the side or from below, with the unused connection closed using stopper plugs.

This gives machine designers more flexibility when surrounding equipment makes one connection direction difficult to access. It can also simplify replacement work where the existing pneumatic tubing has already been routed to a particular side of the actuator.

If the load acts directly in line with the piston rod and does not need external guidance, a simpler compact pneumatic cylinder may be sufficient. SGM becomes particularly valuable when the actuator must also support and control the attached mechanism.

SGM and SMC MGPM Replacement Searches

Published EMC SGM product data states that the principal installation dimensions correspond to the SMC MGPM guided-cylinder format.

This makes EMC SGM particularly relevant when engineers are searching for an alternative around an existing SMC MGPM-style installation. It should not, however, be treated as an automatic replacement purely because the main dimensions are similar.

Check the complete bore, stroke, mounting centres, pneumatic ports, permissible side load, permissible torque, switch arrangement and machine environment before changing manufacturer.

Example: EMC SGM 25/50

SGM 25/50 is a 25 mm bore × 50 mm stroke guided pneumatic cylinder with a G1/8 pneumatic connection.

Published technical data for this version specifies self-lubricating slide bearings, magnetic piston sensing, a permissible lateral force of 131 N and permissible end-plate torque of 3.35 Nm.

Example: EMC SGM 50/50

SGM 50/50 increases the piston diameter to 50 mm while retaining the same guided actuator concept. It uses a G1/4 pneumatic connection and the verified construction includes an anodised aluminium body, steel plate, hard-chrome-plated guide rods and piston rod, aluminium piston and NBR / PUR seals.

The published 50/50 specification gives a permissible lateral force of 245 N and permissible end-plate torque of 10.8 Nm, demonstrating why the load data should be considered as well as the nominal cylinder force when selecting a guided actuator.

Longer SGM Stroke Options

EMC literature documents SGM stroke lengths through to 250 mm, while the current Cylinder Warehouse catalogue includes combinations ranging from very short guided movements through to products such as SGM 32/200 and SGM 63/200.
