Technical information & FAQs
EMC ZDM ISO 6432 Pneumatic Cylinders
EMC Series ZDM pneumatic cylinders are double-acting ISO 6432 round actuators designed for compact industrial machinery, OEM equipment and replacement applications. The Eco-Line range combines a slim stainless-steel cylinder tube with a magnetic piston, making it a practical choice where a conventional mini pneumatic cylinder needs reliable powered movement in both directions together with non-contact position sensing.
ZDM is available in 16, 20 and 25 mm bore sizes, with a broad choice of strokes from short 10 mm movements through to long 500 mm configurations on selected 25 mm bore models. This gives the range considerably more flexibility than a mini pneumatic cylinder intended only for short-stroke duties.

Compact ISO 6432 Construction
The ISO 6432 round-cylinder format is widely used where machine space is restricted and a slim pneumatic actuator is preferred over a larger profile cylinder.
EMC ZDM uses this compact format across three bore sizes while still offering substantial stroke capability. It is therefore suitable for short machine functions as well as longer transfer, positioning and handling movements where a small-diameter body is advantageous.

16, 20 and 25 mm Bore Options
- 16 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — the smallest ZDM format for light machine movements and compact automation.
- 20 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — a useful mid-size for general positioning, handling and fixture applications.
- 25 mm bore pneumatic cylinders — the largest ZDM bore, with the broadest published long-stroke capability.
Stroke Lengths from 10 to 500 mm
The standard EMC ZDM catalogue includes stroke lengths of 10, 25, 40, 50, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200 and 250 mm across the main bore range.
Selected 25 mm bore models extend the series further with 320, 400 and 500 mm strokes. This makes ZDM particularly useful where a machine requires a relatively slim pneumatic cylinder but more travel than would normally be associated with a small round actuator.
| Bore | Verified Stroke Capability |
|---|---|
| 16 mm | 10–250 mm |
| 20 mm | 10–250 mm |
| 25 mm | 10–500 mm |
Pneumatic Ports and Piston-Rod Threads
The pneumatic connection and piston-rod thread change with bore size, so the complete EMC MPN should be used whenever possible during replacement.
| Bore | Pneumatic Port | Piston-Rod Thread |
|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | M5 | M6 |
| 20 mm | G1/8 | M8 |
| 25 mm | G1/8 | M10 × 1.25 |
Magnetic Piston for Position Sensing
The M within ZDM identifies the magnetic-piston configuration. This allows compatible cylinder switches to detect piston position without a mechanical limit switch contacting the moving actuator.
That makes ZDM suitable for automated machinery where a PLC needs confirmation that the pneumatic cylinder has reached its extended or retracted position before the next part of the machine cycle begins.
Stainless-Steel Round Tube
ZDM uses a 1.4301 stainless-steel cylinder tube together with a 1.4305 stainless-steel piston rod. The head and foot are anodised aluminium and the standard sealing material is NBR.
This gives the pneumatic cylinder a clean, slim round construction while keeping it economically positioned within EMC's Eco-Line range.
ZDM or ZDPM?
The most useful comparison within the EMC mini-cylinder range is between standard ZDM and EMC ZDPM pneumatic cylinders.
| EMC Series | Main Characteristic | Best Starting Point When... |
|---|---|---|
| ZDM | Standard magnetic double-acting ISO 6432 construction | A straightforward compact round pneumatic cylinder is required |
| ZDPM | ISO 6432 configuration with additional pneumatic end cushioning | Controlled end-of-stroke deceleration is important to the application |
Both ranges share the same general ISO 6432 mini-cylinder architecture, but the cushioning requirement should be preserved when replacing an existing actuator.
ZDM or EMC XLE?
EMC XLE uses the considerably larger ISO 15552 profile-cylinder format. ZDM is the better starting point where the machine is built around a slim 16–25 mm ISO 6432 round actuator.
The two ranges should therefore not be compared only by stroke. Their bore range, body format, mounting dimensions and mechanical connections are fundamentally different.
Replacing an Existing EMC ZDM Pneumatic Cylinder
The complete part number provides the quickest route to the correct replacement. For example, ZDM 20/80 E identifies a 20 mm bore × 80 mm stroke EMC Eco-Line ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinder.
Similarly, ZDM 25/320 E identifies the larger 25 mm bore version with a 320 mm stroke. The E is part of the EMC Eco-Line manufacturer designation and should remain with the replacement MPN.
If the exact EMC product is unavailable, browse ISO 6432 pneumatic cylinders from other manufacturers while checking the complete mounting and connection dimensions rather than bore and stroke alone.
EMC ZDM Selection Questions
Is EMC ZDM definitely ISO 6432?
Yes. EMC ZDM is documented as an ISO 6432 / CETOP RP 52 P double-acting round pneumatic cylinder range.
What does the M in ZDM mean?
It identifies the magnetic-piston version, allowing compatible cylinder switches to be used for position sensing.
What bore sizes are available?
The standard Eco-Line ZDM range is available in 16, 20 and 25 mm bore.
What is the longest ZDM stroke?
The standard catalogue extends to 500 mm stroke on selected 25 mm bore models. The 16 and 20 mm ranges extend to 250 mm in the verified standard catalogue.
Does a 16 mm ZDM use the same pneumatic port as a 25 mm version?
No. Verified 16 mm ZDM pneumatic cylinders use M5 ports, while 20 and 25 mm models use G1/8 connections.
Is the cylinder tube stainless steel?
Yes. The verified ZDM Eco-Line construction uses a 1.4301 stainless-steel tube and 1.4305 stainless-steel piston rod.
Where can I compare the cushioned version?
See EMC ZDPM pneumatic cylinders where adjustable end-of-stroke control is required.
