Adjustable Cushioning Is the Defining ZDPM Feature

When a pneumatic cylinder reaches the end of its stroke, the piston and attached machine load still carry kinetic energy. If that movement stops abruptly, the resulting impact can be transferred into the cylinder, mounting hardware and surrounding machine structure.

When Adjustable Cushioning Becomes Important

Not every pneumatic movement requires manually adjustable cushioning. On a very slow, lightly loaded mechanism, a simpler actuator may be sufficient.

ZDPM becomes more valuable as piston speed, attached mass or cycle frequency increases. These conditions increase the energy that must be absorbed when the pneumatic cylinder reaches the end of its travel.

Adjustable Cushioning Is Not Speed Control

Where full-stroke speed needs to be adjusted, suitable pneumatic flow-control valves should be used in the circuit. The flow control sets the general movement speed, while the ZDPM cushioning is then tuned to manage the final part of the stroke.
